A Report of 137 Cases of Thyroidectomy in Dr Heshmat Hospital ,in Rasht ,Guilan (1360 - 1365)

ABSTRACT : To study the indications and results of thyroidectomy in a non-academic hospital in RASHT, the center of Guilan province, we studied the pre- and post-operation status of 137 patients admitted between 1360 -1365 in Dr Heshmat hospital. The pathologic reports of 100 cases were available, and 62 patients presented for postoperative evaluation . Eighty seven percent of the patients were females . The age of ( mean±SD, years) of males and females was 29.5±11.5 and 31.5±10, respectively. In more than 90% of the patients the chief complaints were goiter or neck mass. ninety two Patients had cold nodule. Preoperative diagnosis was cold nodule in 68% and multinodular goiter in 23.5% of cases . The type of operation was lobectomy or lobectomy and isthmectomy in 70% of cases and subtotal or near total thyroidectomy in 22.5% of cases. The pathologic diagnosis was endemic goiter in 68% of cases . Eight percent had thyroid carcinomas. The prevalence of Hashimoto's thyroiditis was four percent. Postoperatively, 5 patients had vocal cord paralysis and one other patient had hypoparathyroidism. In conclusion ,the majority of the patients who underwent thyroidectomy were females with endemic goiter. The prevalence of thyroid carcinoma was much less than reports from university centers of Tehran, despite more limited operation, the complications were more frequent. The majority of patients had endemic goiter. The Hashimoto's Thyroiditis was much more common than that in previous reports.
